MX-80 back in the day, featuring the Tao and the MCPL

Bob Gulcher diligently sent along this remarkable blog entry from one HT who apparently signed MX-80 to Island Records back in the day:

Asking my boss David Betteridge if he'd "uh, like to go to to Bloomington?" I was, frankly, a bit surprised when he said "yes". So we found ourselves de-planing in Indianapolis and being driven for roughly an hour to a coffee bar/health-food joint (with ashram attached) in Bloomington called Tao. There, we met up with Rich and his wife Andrea....

I should note that the trip to Bton circa nineteen-seventies-groovy took place under the auspices of a different label than Island. Read the entry to learn more!

My prom date went on to B-town for college a year before I did and I sent her on a scavenger hunt for the "Big Hits" EP. She never found a copy. Bruce is definitely one of the greatest guitar innovators of all time.

This is an awesome bit of history, thanks for posting. The Mark Bingham (Screaming Gypsy Bandits, Social Climbers) piece on the same blog is also worth a read. Good inside info.

I also love the comments about John Waters and how the folks in Bloomington turned the Record Guy on to Female Trouble.

Nice! When ever I play MX80 for anyone who is unfamiliar with them, I always feel the need to say "this must of really shook folks up back in the mid seventies." Big Hits is a great record which will always hold it's own, but when you examine it in the context of the time it was made, it is almost a miracle.

I never knew that "White Knight" was about Bob Knight. This is a great snapshot of MX-80 and '70's Bton.

Andy, yeah, I know what you're saying...the Lemonheads then instantly faded into multi-platinum obscurity. That's such a great perspective when most people have no idea the band even existed pre-1992. If anyone bothering to read this hasn't heard t…

Burd, I would never accuse you of being shy about speaking your mind. And I doubt anyone would have thought me anything but a raging snob from way back. And with the anti-Manilow snobbery of the post below, we continue to have plenty in common. FTR:…

John, it didn't seem like good natured to me when I went back and looked. It reeked of pretentious snobbery. Haughtiness. The funny thing is; I'd probably step up and say something if someone was doing it to you. Incidently, there are all sorts of t…
