Musical Family Tree

The Indiana Music Archive and Online Community

I had 2 tapes of the Safety Pups that I bought from them in 87 and 88. They were cool, and their music opened my mind, causing me to become a lifelong industrial music fan and maker.
Those tapes were stolen in 1990, by some thief who just broke in and grabbed stuff including my bag of favorite things.
But alas, I just found a copy that I had made of most of one of them, and realized that with this internet thing, there is hope of me finding THE Safety Pups, or people who know them, or have their old tapes.
Thanks!
Derek

Ben Minkler has a website or blog somewhere online... I don't have the link. You might check the "No Bar" discussion thread here and see if there's any info. I was partner'd in and would work shifts at the No Bar when the Safety Pups came into being. Their soundscapes were challenging and interesting sonic freak-outs and their shows, while often sparsely attended, were performance, art, noise and music smashed into one big ball. One winter (86?) Ben handmade Safety Pups sweatshirts by spraypainting dayglow stripes onto white long-sleeve sweatshirts... kinda like a safety barrier symbol. 3 months later I was visiting a friend in Bloomington Indiana and some guy (most likely a relative of Ben's) was out jogging wearing one of them!

Derek i don't log into this site much anymore, but i checked my master tapes and found the masters for both Safety Pups tapes. They probably haven't been played in at least a decade, but I can probably get a dub off them. If you send me your address, I will send you copies

Hello again, I had to get everything digitized and posted.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and subsequent trip down memory lane. :) Great to hear all of the other stuff that I would have bought if I had money back then.

So, here is a link to the tape I recorded after my first trip to Muncie and purchasing the Muncie sampler and my first of 2 Safety Pups tapes. It was the one with the orange diagonal lines spray painted on it.
PS, Jeb, if you would like to post my tracks here, I would be honored. They can be downloaded directly from last.fm, or I can zip them up and mail them to you.

Also, I have a box of reel to reel tapes that Jon Rans gave me when I bought his record collection back in 2000 or so. Fantastic collection btw, wish I had more of it left, keep some, sold most.

I think most are the psych band he was in. I should dig through them sometime and put them on the reel to reel to check out.

Derek, I would love to hear and include some of your "Muncie inspired" music on this site. I think it belongs as long as it's decent quality.

I actually thought I might have been part of this band, but finally it came back to me that the band I was in was The Guerilla Art Team... or perhaps I was in a latter version with Ben Menkler. We practiced at the No Bar and been would record long sessions and edit them into Industial Sonic Mayhem... Anyway.... I do have some tapes I will dig up and post asap. Anybody heard from Ben?

Wow... I just perused the tape archive. Grinning uncontrollably. Makes me want to get off my proverbial butt and make a site for all of the tapes we made as a result of hearing Muncie's finest. Thanks again!

Cool! Thanks to all of you for the advice. I recognize some of those graphics. Not sure if I just saw the cassettes at the old store, or if those images were used on flyers? I have a sticker on my guitar from back then that has a guy pouring out a carton of milk, looks like the same person drew it that did the Muncie Sampler 3. Also, does anyone know if that is the cassette with "Baby on Board"?

As I said, the 2 weeks I hung out at No Bar in 87 and 88 were life changing for me... I mean to the extent that I went home to Virginia and talked my parents into letting me clean out the basement and turn it into a alcohol free venue for monthly parties featuring my friends' bands, and I made SP influenced (more like directly copied) music with my friend Kurt Heasley (he now has a band called Lilys). My whole basement was covered in flyers, mostly from No Bar, since the owners were nice enough to give me a stack of old ones.

http://www.bobchaos.com/ is where you wanna go. There's Safety Pups on some of the old Muncie Samplers too, I think. I feel ya about lost tapes! Every couple weeks or so I remember some awesome old tape that I lost switching cars, moving, etc etc. Praise be to the archivists among us!

Safety Pups!! Try contacting Ian Rans on his page here. He has a site of No Bar Music called Bob Chaos (something). I am sure there is a link to his site somewhere here on MFT. Try Bill Zinks marathon "Hello Muncie" blog, maybe.

Add Your Band, yo

Want to add a band to the MFT Archive? Good idea, push this thing here...

note: currently looking for bands with an Indiana connection doing something original...thanks

Andy, yeah, I know what you're saying...the Lemonheads then instantly faded into multi-platinum obscurity. That's such a great perspective when most people have no idea the band even existed pre-1992. If anyone bothering to read this hasn't heard t…

Burd, I would never accuse you of being shy about speaking your mind. And I doubt anyone would have thought me anything but a raging snob from way back. And with the anti-Manilow snobbery of the post below, we continue to have plenty in common. FTR:…

John, it didn't seem like good natured to me when I went back and looked. It reeked of pretentious snobbery. Haughtiness. The funny thing is; I'd probably step up and say something if someone was doing it to you. Incidently, there are all sorts of t…
