Pimento

Inspired by the kitchen sink, this spicy little thing contains several piano compositions, a few rock songs with vocals, harmonization with the sewer sucker, some fun soundtrack ideas, a really long atmospheric piece about ascending into heaven (made from Easter Sunday iPhone recordings) and what should have been the real end credit music to "Crouching… Continue

Doc Dart-The Troublemaker

I came across this piece just the other day and found it fascinating:

http://www.viceland.com/int/v16n1/htdocs/the-troublemakers-515.php

Doc Dart was the lead "singer" for the early '80's Michigan punk band The Crucifucks. Notoriously confrontatiional, Dart was arrested several times for his "anti-police" sentiments. I have to admit that I haven't thought about him or his band for many years but… Continue

2000 MFT Members begs a question- How big is too big?

We just passed the 2000 mark for members on this site.

Although I know that only a small percentage of the members visit the site on a daily basis I have begun wondering, should we cap membership on this site at some point in order to keep the quality of conversations as high as possible.

So is we decided that the site should only have 2000 members we could let in new ones as inactive ones were gently "bumped" from the site.

I don't want this to be exclusive… Continue

Arkansas Poetry Meat lab

Author Jillian Lauren recently posted a blog entry ("Eastern Promises," 9 Aug 2010) in which she told the story of a woman who—in my opinion, at least—came this close to becoming a Meat Poet...…

Can a sense of continuity exist in a region without documentation?

I could use some help from the community as I try to get our panel selected for SXSW 2011:

If everybody who reads this thread would sign up for an account, give us a thumb's up, and leave a comment it would be awesome.

I will start to answer the question Can a sense of continuity exist in a region without documentation?

I mean the answer clearly is no. Maybe… Continue

Female Artists in Rock; Blues and Gospel Origins

Apparently there is a big gap in content on this site. There seems to be next to nothing on Blues and Gospel, except some isolated comments here and there. Rock is great, but it wouldn't exist were it not for Blues, Gospel and other genres. I'm also a huge fan of female musicians and vocalists, many are featured here at MFT. I miss XX chromosome input on music which moves my soul. So here it goes.

The Pieces Reunite

The Pieces are joining together for a one-off show at the Vogue on Friday, August 27 in conjunction with the quickly growing Pecha Kucha movement of demonstration which, judging from the description from MOKB and Wikipedia, makes me think of Billy Mays and Sham… Continue

Pecha Kucha 8/27- Vinyl Records in 20 Slides

I just found out that my offer to present on vinyl records- their history, how they are made, why they rock, etc. was accepted by Pecha Kucha.

I presented on MFT at the last one and I really wish I had videotaped it since I think it went well. I could share the slides but they wouldn't make a ton of sense. Hopefully this presentation I can have the presence of mind to record.

Any input on this? I have 20 slides and 20… Continue

Wikipedia- Music Of Indiana

I was researching some records I bought and came across this page on Wikipedia

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_Indiana

I was surprised and disappointed to see that it was very incomplete and clearly edited by someone with an agenda

"In 2008, we were introduced to two new anthems of hope in the Symphonics' "Commencement", which blazed with vocals by Brendon

"Bishop" Garrett, and poetry by John… Continue

Looka there!

The entire Pieces record just went up, looks like.

I know most of you Indianapolitans are familiar with the band, but don't know if you know the record. It's fantastic. Vess' songwriting and the production just lock into my brain. I really, really like it.

Spence and I saw Vess and co. on the Some Girls tour where they were opening for (and sharing Heidi with) Freda and Juliana, and we were utterly… Continue

Rockabilly Hall of Fame: JIANTS, from Marion, Indiana

Marion Indiana where I went to middle/high school has a Rockabilly Hall of Fame member. The Jiants were from Marion, and featured Jerry Hedges. His son Aaron plays in the Crawpuppies, playing at Birdys (see events).

Our high school was The Giants, so maybe that's where the name came from?

I looked up the Jiants myspace. Check it out! They should be on MFT!

Marmoset Releases Cassingle (Cassette-Single)

Just when you thought they might be inching toward normality, Marmoset throws us a curve-ball dipped in chocolate and acid:

Yup, that right there's a cassette-single or as Joyful Noise dubs- "cassingle" to tease an upcoming full length release. They're offering a free download of the songs "Doo Wop" and "She's Wearing Rings" via their site (…

Would like information on this late 50's or earley 60's C&W band?????

When I bought the old home place this photo was hanging. My cousin Bill Yarbor identified the Bass player as Jack Little. Thinks he is still alive and living down around Marion, Ill. Thanks for helping..
