Spreading Indiana Music

July 2008 Blog Posts (50)

Hi Everyone...

My sister April and I will be doing a little tour together - playing Cincinnati, Bloomington, Indianapolis and Chicago - doing our solo stuff as well as some re-imagined music from our band of yesteryear, Arson Garden. Its our first tour together in... well, more years than we care to mention aloud. But we're excited to be bringing our music to you and hope you'll come and say hello. Our stellar harmony-singing colleague Laurie Burnham will also be joining… Continue

Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog

If you haven't seen this 3 act web featurette...Do yourself a favor and check it out. It reminds me of a sort of an updated Rocky Horroresq musical. It's free on for a limited… Continue

Raising Some Money, Giving You Music

So we have decided to run little promo offers for donations. This means that we will be sending out CDs, changing every few weeks, to anyone that donates $10 or more to MFT. We have a large inventory of CDs as well as many new releases coming out so we figured this was a good way to meet our goals of raising some funds as well as getting everyone some music.

The new MFT store is in the works, finalizing designs and setting up development, so that will return this fall. But I think… Continue

Street Waves

So, I decided to join up here. Resisted for quite a while — not just because the last thing I need is another blog/social site to obsess over, but because I have such mixed feelings about my life when I was in Bloomington and just didn't want to dredge up a bunch of shit. But what the hell.

I really appreciate this community and what y'all are doing to remember, honor and muse about the efforts of so many people. I'm coming up on 50 and making records and playing in a rock band and at… Continue

WFIU-Bloomington feature on John Terrill's FROWNY FROWN

Hey all, thought I'd post a link to the podcast and online archive of a 7-minute feature I did for WFIU's Artworks program last Tuesday night about the reissue of John Terrill's solo album Frowny Frown:

Frowny Frown on WFIU

It's very brief, but it includes some remarks from John and 1-minute… Continue

10 Years Gone: Sweet Heart Radiator LP

Recorded at Echo Park between April and July of 1998 w/ the ever skillful hands and ears of Mark Maher at the helm. Still some of my favorite recordings I've ever done/ been a part of, and the line up was me, Kenny Pfau, Aaron Spelbring, and Chris Duggan. This band would eventually morph into Baroo with Kenny, PJ, and I all moving up to Chicago that fall of '98 and hooking up w/ Eric Himes. By early 2000, Deb and Joey Werner had joined the band.

This was a 200 cassette release back… Continue

I got an A+!

My final project for my Sound Design class. The video is flawed, but I'm pretty happy with the audio. I composed the main theme and the piece under the "transformation" sequence, but the "love theme" is Phillip Glass. We were supplied with video from different films and were supposed to edit them together into a fairly coherent narrative with music and sound effects. Now...Somebody give me a… Continue

AOTM & Vulgar Boatmen Live at 2006 MMS MFT Showcase

After a 1.3 years of self-imposed hiatus from anything other than work & staying home, Jeb Banner slowly prodded me into finally reengaging with the world and mixing down some of the 100 or so shows I recorded over the course of a year and a half, mostly for MFT.

I mixed down the Margot at the Irving (12/30/06) show over the course of a week or so, to get my mixing chops working. http://www. musicalfamilytree. org/band/margot_and_the_nuclear_so_and_sos

Repellents Now On Myspace

Dave Jr. set up a Myspace page for The Repellents. Add us as friends. There are a few songs up (2 unreleased!), so join up, and live right! I have a crap load of old pics that I dug up, and will eventually post both here and there. We're also looking for someone to release our old recordings since most never saw the light of day.

Speaking of Cokerness...

I went over to visit heather today and she let me revisit the only surviving set of Cokerware on the planet. Neatly tucked away between sheets of packing paper the black on white stoneware set remains in it's 1991 pristine condition. I was in awe. The way the light caught the little Coker heads as they danced on the edges of the plates and bowls made tears well up. It was a beautiful site to behold.

I can only hope that the Urschels will find it in their hearts to share some pictures… Continue

The other version of "Jesus...."

... the one I promised in the last blog post: I've posted it on my page. This was the third lineup of Shovel Choir, after the one in the UK (long story) and the earliest version, the studio-only project featuring me, Steve Zimmers, and John M. Davison. The lineup here was:

Clay Cousins (a Chesterton native and old friend from high school): vocals

Me: vocal, guitar, production

Ron Pyke:…

Three new snapshots of the extended family history, and musing on "folk"

My old friend and collaborator Steve Wolf has posted three recordings of songs that I either wrote or co-wrote.

The band, at the time, was called Uncle Bob and the Fear, and featured:

Guy Crundwell: guitar, vocals

Another new MP3 of an old song

I've posted "Roman Sixty" as recorded by Shovel Choir in 1994 (?). The lineup was:

Me: vocal, guitar, production

Ron Pyke: drums

Michael Sankowski: bass, production

Steve Zimmers: keyboard, production

If I recall correctly, this was originally credited as a song that I'd written by my lonesome. But in truth, at least two other people wrote the song, which in some sense I only transcribed, like… Continue

Damn!...Another Fauxker pic!

Found this one under a floorboard in the shed...It could be Fabio, but that's not my first guess.

We need to be able to post comments on band pages

I would give some love to this band and it's fallen comrade

That's all I need to say.

The Monkey’s Tale

I completely forgot to write about this show in the last issue. I’d been feeling a bit disconnected from Broad Ripple lately, which is odd since I spend so much time there. But I realized that I unless I was working I hadn’t spent too much daylight time in the Village in ages.

The first day of summer was a great day to… Continue
