Part 2: Inauspicious Beginnings (1981-82)

Once I’d discovered – and devoted my life to – punk, it became a bit challenging in suburban Bloomington to truly pursue my passion. I had one childhood friend, Harry, who shared my appreciation for the music. Harry spent our seventh grade year in London and came back with some great records and stories about the amazing shit going on over there. Nevertheless, Harry did not yet share my enthusiasm for figuring out and assimilating the codes and customs of punk fashion. Both drummers in school… Continue

All I've got is a postcard, and a handful of souvenirs

The title of my blog today is a line from "Wrote It Down", its the second track on the second record that my (now defunct) band Paging Raymond.

Its loose rock and roll song with some achingly beautiful lyrics, penned by my co-frontman and co-founder of the band Aaron Adelsperger. That track served as the announcement to our fans that we had plugged in, and was a real testament to the level of songwriting we had gotten to since our previous, mainly acoustic effort Please. Quiet.… Continue

Part 1 - Punk (1981)

In 1981 - the summer before ninth grade - I made the full transition from passing interest in punk rock to full-on obsession. I owned a few punk and "new wave" albums: The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Specials, Talking Heads, The Pretenders, Blondie, Boomtown Rats, English Beat, The Ramones, The Police; however, my heart was still in the hard rock dinosaurs such as Led Zep, Aerosmith, ZZ Top and AC/DC. I didn't really distinguish between the punk stuff and the hard rock stuff - the Sex Pistols… Continue

My Life Story

I've decided that I'm going to use this page to write my life story, beginning with my earliest memories, which date back to 1981. I have no recollection whatsoever of my life between 1967 and 1980. Hopefully this will jog some additional memories, but I'm not holding my breath.

Since I have three small children, a job as an attorney with a large corporate law firm, an adjunct faculty position at a local law school, a yard, and various neglected musical projects, I'll likely only be… Continue

MFT Documentary

I have been thinking about a documentary for some time that draws upon the whole nature of the MFT site. I grew up in Broad Ripple during the 90s and then moved to IU for school and experienced what I consider (bias?) to be one of the most unique periods in the Indiana underground scene. The amount of talent that branched out to form what Jeb has so masterfully realized with this site is something that I consider very special. I am currently living in Nashville TN and have started a production… Continue

Teenage EMO Freakout!!!

Check out that Tanner Boyle song, it's from the first record that I worked on that actually got released. The Kooch and I recorded it when we were interning at September Recording in one of those mammoth all weekend recording sessions. It's completely sloppy and out of tune, but were you making records this good when you were a teenager? I played with these guys for a while later on. I wasn't really into this style of music, but their spirit was really infectious. The first time I played in DC… Continue

Cool Cliff May article

From the Chronicle. I love Mid-Century ranch houses, it's probably from growing up in Eagledale/Speedway. My Dad has a killer little brick rancher out on the westside that he's always complaining about. If that thing was in LA (if you could have a brick house in LA) it would be some movie star's million dollar bachelor pad, but in Indy they're a dime a dozen. Whenever I come home I fantasize about how great all of our Modernica Eames/Nelson knock-offs would look in… Continue

Good Beer Show 149; Full Otto

I love comedians. I am proud to have had "Otto the Comic" on episode 149 of our show. At 300 gigs a year, he has to be one of the hardest working performers I know. I shot some HD video of this show but I will post it later. I want to use my audio instead of the camera's craptastic sound. It will take some time. Check out Otto's MySpace site. Thanks Otto!

Coming back to: Fabric "Wooly Mammoth" 1997 and some 1990s pics/fliers

This is a gem of an album. At first you might find it a little obtuse with all the weird blips and beeps, but get past that a little and you will find an amazing little masterpiece with excellent songwriting and performances to match. This was a band that was always on the verge or breaking up or imploding in some exquisite fashion, often while on stage. So it is remarkable that they were able to pull off a record this polished and well produced. A must!…
