About Me
I lived in Bloomington from August 1984 to August 1990, initially moving there to go to college at IU. Somehow I actually managed to graduate on time. When I moved there I was almost 18. I did a lot of growing up. I was also heavily involved in the music scene. I was a WQAX DJ, lived in Collins, worked at the Runcible Spoon, and also lived in such notable houses as 1st & Grant, 1st & Henderson, and the Church Of Danger on S. 14th and Washington. In 1990 I moved to Eugene, Oregon, and have been here ever since. I visited Bloomington once in the year 2000. It was awesome. I'll be back later this year.

my 2008 top twenty or so

a little late here, I know, but I was inspired by my similarities to Amber Uhlurt's list. here ya go:

in order, more or less:

Fall, The - Imperial Wax Solvent (their best in many years)
Gas - Nah Und Fern (a reissue, but what the hell)
Nurse With Wound - Huffin' Rag Blues ("Black Teeth" = song of the year)
Indian Jewelry - Free Gold! (this record is amazing, my fave new band in a few years)
Fotheringay - 2 (not exactly a reissue, but old - and great)
Paavoharju - Laulu Laakson Kukista (gorgeou… Continue

Part 3 (1985-86): Black Rooms, Shantytowns, and Henderson Houses

OK, I am sitting at an Internet café in Peru. I’m bored and I have all day. Seems like a perfect time to reactivate my “memories of Bloomington series.” As you may recall, when I left off last time I was standing with Mike Whybark on the porch of a new rental he had on the corner of Harold and Alice streets. He told me there was a party that night and that I should come by. It was the week before classes started, so probably late August.

At the party that night I met two rad girls who were new… Continue

Autumn 1984 part 2 (and onward into the future)

I think there's a certain point in most of our lives when the door opens wide, and we realize there's much more to life than we thought. Growing up in this society, it may take some folks a while, but we eventually encounter a much bigger world than life with our parent(s) prepared us for. People react to this in very different ways, and one of the best possible vantage points to see and experience this transition shock is in a large state university.

I wanted to talk some about what makes Bloo… Continue

Autumn 1984 part 1 - The Ricky's months

There has been so much crazy great stuff on this site already that I now post with a certain degree of self-awareness. Reading Stephen Canner's Your Real Dad post is like reading some weird parallel history of me if I had been a couple of years older. Totally fascinating. Anyway, onwards to more nostalgia!

Note: For reference, the post before this discusses my gradual discovery of hardcore and hearing about this band called Jody Foster's Army, I had just missed seeing them in Texas.

Remember,… Continue

Sorry to be so tardy in responding.

You still in Eugene or somewhere out Or'gon way? Spud says he hears from you very occasionally.

Hello from the Border, Steve -- we haven't talked in a couple of decades, but some funny balloon punching-bag clowns in a dream last night told me to see how you were doing... and I always do what the clowns tell me :). Thanks for being easy to find, as many people of my past are not. More soon, I hope!

Hey you! I was just reading that early voting story on yer free webs blog--how touching! I have a friend here from Gary IN and we were just talking about this last nite at work. There are lots of people that will vote this year that haven't bothered to vote before--and they will vote for Obama. I can't wait!
Are you and Laurie back in Peru? I love reading about that. Keep up the good work and lots of love to both of you!

Hey Steve! Great photos--you have the Collins flyer from the first time the Nids played and we called ourselves friends of art. I still remember how much I enjoyed the zulu beatniks and reality vs. this that evening. Hope all is going well for you. I believe the last time I saw you was when you still lived across the street from us on Fess.
