Yes, Kenneth, quite so. We're all in agreement on that point, largely thanks to Deutch's fascinating book, as well as locating the original McCulloch essay linked to -- prominently -- and discussed above. See also the third paragraph of my original…

In less than two centuries, the Ishmaels went from being an obscure colonial-era family of poor Pennsylvania farmers to being put on display before millions of visitors to the Chicago World's Fair of 1933 as the very image of degeneracy and criminal…

Thanks for posting this -- there's a bunch of early history in there I didn't know about.

Sort of on a tangent to a couple of the above posts: there are a HUGE number of KY immigrants (as well as TN) on the South side of Indy. I've often said that the N and S sides are different cities. Sometimes it seems that people that grew up on the…

Very interesting article--thanks for posting. From fifth through eighth grade I went to a school situated right in the heart of Brickville, and I'm not sure the "vanished race" had completely vanished.

About Me
Second wave old-timer (1983-1986ish) from the Broad Ripple punk scene, plus I hung out in Bloomington some in the same years. Moved to Chicago in the fall of 1985 and got into weird(er), noisy(er) music. Then in 1996 I moved to Seattle, where there's a mini-tribe of Hoosier escapees holding out in the green, soggy wilds.

The Life and Times of Shecky Pitts

This started out as my "About Me" babble, which really was just excessive. So I moved it here. So there.

Born at Methodist Hospital on Hiroshima Day. Grew up at various points around Indy -- the Butler area, Fall Creek, 52nd & College.... After a torturous stint at Brebeuf I escaped to Broad Ripple HS, where I did dorky shit like theater and the weekly (!) newspaper. Long 'bout then I started hearing about this "punk rock" stuff and seeing Zero Boys graffiti on a retaining wall at the clean… Continue

Burd, I would never accuse you of being shy about speaking your mind. And I doubt anyone would have thought me anything but a raging snob from way back. And with the anti-Manilow snobbery of the post below, we continue to have plenty in common. FTR:…

John, it didn't seem like good natured to me when I went back and looked. It reeked of pretentious snobbery. Haughtiness. The funny thing is; I'd probably step up and say something if someone was doing it to you. Incidently, there are all sorts of t…
