About Me
I'm working as correspondent for Bill Moyers Journal on PBS TV and teaching part-time at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. I also occasionally freelance for my former employer, National Public Radio.

I'm still making music with a bunch of people from "back in the day" as Box Set Authentic. That group includes:

Guy Crundwell, a Highland native, Purdue grad, and veteran of West Lafayette's Teeth and the Man, Uncle Bob and the Fear, and the Velmas;

John Demoulpied of the Velmas;

Joy Gregory of Chicago's Tart;

Mike Sankowski, another Highland native and veteran of West Lafayette's Frank's Gang and Chicago's Scummy Fish, Shovel Choir, and Tart;

Matthew Neill Sharp, a Lafayette native, Purdue grad, and veteran of Bloomington's F.R.S.C./Motherbox and West Lafayette's Vergiftung;

random British addition Mark A. Venn; and

Steve Zimmers, yet another Highland native and Purdue grad who played with me in Teeth and the Man and Shovel Choir.

What bands are you or have you been in?
Idiot Savant (Highland)
The Guests (West Lafayette)
Teeth and the Man (West Lafayette)
East of Eden (West Lafayette)

The other version of "Jesus...."

... the one I promised in the last blog post: I've posted it on my page. This was the third lineup of Shovel Choir, after the one in the UK (long story) and the earliest version, the studio-only project featuring me, Steve Zimmers, and John M. Davison. The lineup here was:

Clay Cousins (a Chesterton native and old friend from high school): vocals

Me: vocal, guitar, production

Ron Pyke: drums

Michael Sankowski: bass

Three new snapshots of the extended family history, and musing on "folk"

My old friend and collaborator Steve Wolf has posted three recordings of songs that I either wrote or co-wrote.

The band, at the time, was called Uncle Bob and the Fear, and featured:

Guy Crundwell: guitar, vocals

Rob Eddy: vocals

Another new MP3 of an old song

I've posted "Roman Sixty" as recorded by Shovel Choir in 1994 (?). The lineup was:

Me: vocal, guitar, production

Ron Pyke: drums

Michael Sankowski: bass, production

Steve Zimmers: keyboard, production

If I recall correctly, this was originally credited as a song that I'd written by my lonesome. But in truth, at least two other people wrote the song, which in some sense I only transcribed, like Willie Dixon did wi… Continue

Hey Rick - I didn't know you were from Indiana either and from "the Region" no less. You know that Elisabeth and Robert are no longer an item, right?

Hey Rick! How's Brooklyn treating you? I haven't seen you on Moyers yet, but I'm sure I will.

Rick, I'm not sure if it is appropriate to post music as blog posts. Do you think things would get really crazy if everyone starting doing that?

I also had the "About The Gumwall" cassette and - most importantly - I was friends with Girls Can Touch's Robert Brian Smith before he went to Purdue... I vaguely remember the name "Shovel Choir" from hangin' out on the fringe of the Chicago scene circa 1990-1994... That armory show was a furious blur but was one of those shows that left a big impact on me... I didn't realize The Singles would end so soon after that but during the time we were at the top of our game... I have some live vid/tape from the No Bar during that era that I'll eventually post...

Thanks for recalling that The Singles show at the armory... was our 2nd to last show and the ONLY show we played without our sax player Kevin Royal... we were pulling pages from "The Jam" 3-piece band style book. I blogged what fuzzy memories I have on my page...
