The Gynecologists - Original Liner Notes

Gulcher Records is releasing the Gynecologists CD, and is using the liner notes I wrote.
Or at least a version of them: here is the original in all of it's glory.
Of all the sick and sordid sagas to come floating out of the punk rock scene in isolated Indiana, none are more twisted than the ravings of Tommy Afterbirth and the band he founded in the late 1970's, the legendary Gynecologists.
This infamous band was the diseased brain child of their lead vocalist, a shambling hulk who had renamed hi… Continue

Cannon Fodder For The Class by the Walking Ruins

Hello everyone:
The Walking Ruins will be playing Friday, June 20th 2008 at Uncle Festers.
We will also be releasing a CD made many years ago and never released. It has 19 tracks and is called "Cannon Fodder For The Class War". Copies will be available at the show.
I have uploaded 3 mp3s for the masses to consume.
See you there!
And here are the liner notes from the disc:
It was the summer of 1990, & unknown to us the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq was just weeks away. We had been frantically sp… Continue

Jerry Lee Lewis My Musical Hero

It was 1979. I was a pseudo-jaded high school junior, already past my infatuation with the Sex Pistols though still enthralled with punk rock (and indeed would form my first band the Panics next year). In a good-faith attempt to foster understanding between parent & spawn, my father told me he had arranged for the family to go see old time rocker Jerry Lee Lewis at a small club in Brown County called The Little Nashville Opry.
Hmmm, that sounds all right, I thought, a free show and those fif… Continue

Rock For No Reason Part Three: Babylon's Burning

THE FIRE
I woke up Monday, very tired but in surprisingly good spirits. It was Labor Day, and after 3 solid days of music, there was a debate over whether to continue past the announced schedule. Eric had arranged in advance for the sound system to stay a fourth day, and finally that morning it was decided, what the heck, if some band wanted to play that night they could. The sound crew slowly began to set up the PA system.
I will never forget what happened next. It was mid-morning. I was sittin… Continue

Rock For No Reason - The Actual Festival

TIME TO ROCK FOR NO REASON
Eric arranged to have a stage built with the help of a theatre group. He hired someone to record the bands and video tape it as well. Finally the big day arrived for the long awaited festival to begin. I was working my job at The Bakery when Eric came by in distress. He had gone to the music store on Kirkwood to rent the drums and amps, but they didn’t have any. Uh oh. I was helpless. It appeared he had waited too long to find out if equipment would be available, but h… Continue

About Me
Lead singer of Walking Ruins and happily married to Amanda, with 2 kids Truman and Ramona. Color me lucky!
What bands are you or have you been in?
Panics 1980 The beginning of it all. Buy the cd.
Panics II 1981 An attempt to cash in on the single.
Johnny ESAD and the Music Killers 1980-85 Based on the theory of "non-music".
Pigwings 1981 Basically the line up of the Panics II doing a single Johnny ESAD type show.
Hard Cold Lumps of Cheese 1982 Another Johnny ESAD knock off show
The Molemen 1982 Much fun. A great group of crimminals, I mean musicians.
Big Rigs A country punk band with Frankie Camaro, Ian, and Jim Stafford. We did I believe one show in Steve Ireland's back yard in 1982.
Skeletones 1983 A short lived project with Seth Spicker and Scott Colburn. We played a street dance, at least.
Beatrice 1984 Mike Ost and Eric White (now Spears), plus JPS on drums.
Swamp Rats 1985 KM Ross, Bad Bob and Ion Man; we made a demo and played a few shows.
Deadbeats 1985-86 Ransom Haille stepping in for KM Ross. We were a pretty crazy outfit. When Ian stepped in we called ourselves the Wobblies.
Walking Ruins 1987-1997, 2006-08 A long lived project, several releases, many gigs, easily the most productive and my own personal favorite.
The John Barge Society 1999-2000 A solo gig but the acoustic guitar just isn't loud enough at a gig
What city are you from?
Bloomington

John, errr uh sorry, for not getting back to you sooner, I didn't realize that I haven't checked my site out in over a year. Well, i guess that's what being debt will do to you. Anyway, I got together with Johnny Carson this summer in NYC (Brooklyn) where he lives with his wife and brand new daughter. He's still playing and really into music, especially stuff from the good ole' punk days. Here's his e-mail address, I'm positive, he'd be really glad to here from yyou CarsonJ@NOBLEPOWER.COM Cheers,. Hi JB.
Hey-I was wondering if you have, like, a "best of" or collection of Walking Ruins stuff available?
I'd really like to have some for the listening in the luxury of my own car or home to annoy friends and neighbors with.
J/k! I don't have any friends!

Ha!

But I do want a cd, dude.

Lemme know.

I love procrastinating with this kind of stuff. Here is a start, no order or top 10, but what I would place in the top 100 or so: Boris, "Pink" and "Smile" and "Amplfier Worship" School of Seven Bells, "Alpinisms" Keren Ann, "Keren Ann" and "la Disp…
