Environmental activist and organizational developer, Derek Reuter has dedicated his life to making positive socio-political change in his native Indiana. He works tirelessly to improve the state’s shamefully poor environmental rankings by simultaneously taking administrative and hands-on approaches, leading the way towards increased conservation and a more sustainable approach to agriculture, industry, development, energy, and the use of our natural resources.
Derek has utilized his skills as a Certified Master Gardener and graduate of the Indiana Watershed Leadership Academy to affect change across the state in permaculture, ethnobotany, and water quality. He has worked with such influential organizations as the Heartland Communities, Citizens Action Coalition, National Park Service, and the Wabash River Heritage Corridor Commission, and has served as Watershed Coordinator for the Upper Maumee River. From this post he created and oversaw programs in education, outreach, inventory, and planning - focusing on pollution protection and ecosystem restoration of a 620 square mile area of land and water in Northeastern Indiana.
Most recently Derek has taken on a leadership role in A Greener Indiana, the state’s online network and support system for individuals, businesses, and organizations concerned with improving the state’s eco-management. He is currently the Northeast Indiana Resource for the Hoosier Environmental Council's education program and is heavily involved in the fight to save Indiana’s Cedar Creek Area, the land of his family heritage and legacy, from degradation and development.
