Right, rich in relative terms. Rich for a 25 year old living with no dependents. I felt like I was doing pretty well at 25, but man I wasn't close to being financially ready to support a family. Yes, there's something to be said for having a lot of…

and by "get rich" you mean make 6 figures for a few years and maybe get some residual income from publishing etc. right? I guess the trade off is the "fame" and all that for the income.

I see the financials for a wide variety of artists, and you are correct. Indie rock can become very profitable if you graduate to the top of the food chain, but otherwise it's tough to make a living. Indie labels' business models are not based aroun…

knowing the guys pretty well, at least the Indy ones, I think it is as amicable as it could be. It's just time for them to get back to all the great stuff they had going on before the Margot storm hit. It was a good run and they now have plenty of e…

New Margot takes shape

“If you tour and do this stuff, you’re kind of in a vacuum for three or four years,” Richard Edwards says. “It seems like everybody, including myself, had to have that extended moment where you have to re-fall in love with what you’ve been doing or you have to move on from it for the time being.”

Transformation yields multi-textured Mardelay

The band known as Mardelay — set to release debut album “What We’ve Become” — is a lot different from the Mardelay that’s fared well in local Battle of the Bands competitions in recent years.

Old-school Mardelay was a three-member jam band. Today’s Mardelay is a multi-textured modern rock quartet with a cello player.

Singer-guitarist Matt Street and drummer Steve Fulton are the only constants.

“New ideas and new faces,” Street says.

Defining 'indie' in Indy

If fractured philosopher Yogi Berra worked for Pitchforkmedia.com, he might unleash this doozy on the blogosphere:

“Nobody listens to indie rock anymore. It’s too popular.”

A panel of experts including Dodge from My Old Kentucky Blog, Jill from We Are Hex, Ben from Lafcadio/A Caesar Holiday, Chris from Same as Sunday and hip-hop hyphenate Grey Granite share their views on a term that's everywhere but hard to pin down.

Everything, Now! -- the in sound from way out

“ ‘Spatially Severed’ is an outer space opera about beings that create each other and also cease to exist when they stop believing in one another,” vocalist-guitarist Jon Rogers says of the current Everything, Now! album. “It’s also about rock ‘n’ roll transmissions that have been sent into outer space, reflecting off of human brains and coming back in a new form.”

The music is melodic, fun and made for sing-alongs -- not unlike what's heard on "Nuggets," the celebrated compilation of garage an… Continue

Dave,

I am wondering if you could help me out with advertising for this benefit show for Aaron Stout in the fall. An article in the paper about him/his music would be wonderful. My goal is to give the money raised to a fund in his name for IPS kids needing instruments. I will let you know once details become more concrete. Right now I am getting musicians interested in playing and hopefully soon finding a venue. This is my summer project.

Thanks,
Jess

Greetings, marvelous Dave.

Hey-thanks for giving me a heads-up about the article & video thing. And extra thanks for making me sound like a semi-legitimate human being. (My mother is so proud.) I won't hold it against you that I look suspiciously swollen in the video . . . .

until next time,

congrats on reproducing! my best advice would be to avoid the urge to raise the young'n as a cubs fan. it's better to let 'em decide for themselves when the time is right.

all the best

Congratulations on the new baby. I'm sure you will seriously
consider naming him or her Otis/Otissa, right? Your
wife will fully agree, I'm confident.

All the best,

Andy, yeah, I know what you're saying...the Lemonheads then instantly faded into multi-platinum obscurity. That's such a great perspective when most people have no idea the band even existed pre-1992. If anyone bothering to read this hasn't heard t…

Burd, I would never accuse you of being shy about speaking your mind. And I doubt anyone would have thought me anything but a raging snob from way back. And with the anti-Manilow snobbery of the post below, we continue to have plenty in common. FTR:…

John, it didn't seem like good natured to me when I went back and looked. It reeked of pretentious snobbery. Haughtiness. The funny thing is; I'd probably step up and say something if someone was doing it to you. Incidently, there are all sorts of t…
