I actually made this flyer. My partner in starting the block, Laura Solman, did a ton of flyers too. You may or may not know this, but I started the Block and it lasted a couple years. Laura and I shared the south ballroom as our apartment. The no...

About Me
9-to-5 academic web monkey; erstwhile pseudo punkrocker

Okay, the less snarky scoop: From '87 to '91, I somehow ended up in Muncie at BSU, having picked it randomly from the selection of catalogs because I liked how the Talley looked and because it got me out of NW Ohio. Depression set in when I got to summer orientation and figured out I'd made a terrible mistake -- Muncie seemed worse than Toledo. Then I saw a NoBar Naked Raygun flyer stuck to a lamppost and a brilliant, blinding light came down from the sky. Saw every show at the No Bar from Sept 87 to closing in 88, sometimes 2-3 a week. After that: too young to get into bars, too poor to go to Chicago -- very sad. Somehow I survived what seemed like the worst years of my life, and 17 years later I'm a medical editor+web editor+sometime graphic artist at an extra-large community college, where I'm allegedly the Program Manager of an online continuing education program for health care professionals (joy). I'm recently married (finally), a homeowner (also finally, though I'm doing my own lead-abatement a la This Old House), and in my spare time I knit and sew reproduction vintage clothing and work in my garden. I'm a crazy cat lady. I can't think of a lifestyle that's less punk, frankly, but I still go to shows occasionally, if they're not past my bedtime. (For example, Yo La Tengo are old, too, so they get it.)
What bands are you or have you been in?
Kung Fu Zombies -- moment of glory: opening for Mystic Groovies @ Garden Party
Arthur Secunda -- played the lounge in Studebaker Hall and a talent show in Clevinger
Not Ohio (Not Featuring Pat Buttram) -- see Muncie Sampler 5, I think; strictly a 4-track experiment made in haste
What city are you from?
Toledo

My current fan-crush: Francois Virot, "Say Fiesta"

I never saw Muncie until after I'd been accepted to Ball State.

My family was broke from my parents' divorce and they weren't going to put me through college anyhow, so I chose from a catalog and went to the school with tuition that was covered 100% by a scholarship. Apparently… Continue

I recently read a novel which was supposedly inspired by an infatuation with Louise Brooks: The Invention of Morel (the cover art certainly is!). Sort of science fictiony...

Hey C--, just discovered a book-- er, graphic novel. Want to share. The title is "The Plain Janes" by Cecil Castellucci (2007, Minx publisher). I just read it last weekend and it blew me away - I suspect you'll appreciate it too. (P.L.A.I.N. is an acronym for "people loving art in neighborhoods.") Target market is teens, but it works for adults too. Your sis' might also dig it.

Still just one baby. Probably until after Christmas anyway. Then, who knows how many at the rate we're makin' babies in this house.

Do you mean Bill Leist, aka Billy Blank? I thought he looked like a cross between Col. Klink and Col. Hogan.

How did Charles like the music? He seemed a little down.

Hi Celeste --

It was great to see you, too. Talk about fabulous -- you rocked it in the 1940s vintage, from pillbox hat to peekaboo pumps.

I hope we'll have more time to catch up in December. And maybe we'll have voices after the Tigerlilies show -- it won't be smoky at Northside Tavern, but we'll still have to shout.

Gimme a call anytime.

Hey -- sorry it took me a bit to reply - just got back from Mexico via Chi-town (No, wasn't able to visit ant of our favorite book stores). Too tired to be safely typing at the moment - might cause an accident!
Maybe try dropping a line about Francois V to Forest Griffin at NKU - he used to work with M Hart and a few other former muncie-ites in their days at Border's. Orrrrrrrrr, is one allowed to send in a CD or MP3, THEN request that CD on friday morning? I recently noticed they've been Playing the Hell outta a Peter Gabriel organized colaboration/compilation called Big Blue Ball. Seems like when a bee gets into the bonnet of one DJ it might buzz in the ears of others too!

Hey Celeste - sorry so late, I've been kindly sick - thanks a ton for the monkey toile show - until now, I fucking hated toile, but the monkey redeem that fabric, at least

This reminds me of what John and Glenn Hicks set up in the studio for their contribution to Velo-Deluxe. Except this times about three.

That's rad, but I don't think that guitar's gonna cut it.

ever consider having a compressor as the last pedal? I find it can nicely pasteurize the sound before hitting the amp, not always needed but can be nice for solos especially cleaner solos without much distortion.

The Electric Mistress died and I haven't replaced it. A little outside of what I typically do these days (guitar playing as opposed to noisemaking - not offense to noisemaking!). Bill, how do you use the EQ pedal? I know Dale Lawrence uses one, I ...
