I have at least one Safety Pups tape. I am in the process of moving, and it is currently in deep storage. I am also temporarily without my master computer (the one I use to digitize cassettes). Hopefully by this fall I will be moved in and posting...
I agree, those letters are GOLD.
awesome!
This is GREAT fuckin' stuff. Thanks for the tip. She never really discussed her time in The Cramps before. It's nice to see the passion there in those letters.

Yeah, this is a much more interesting commentary on branding/consumerism/American Dream than any of those famous Warhol pieces. How big is it?
I don't know why, but this really made me laugh. I think it's great.
. . . and what's the deal with the cowboy tag (yippie-yah-yah, yippie-kie-yie-yaah) at the end of each poem?

About Me
Well, most of the '80's and early '90's are a blur, but here goes: late '80's - "alternative" and jazz buyer, Karma Records; general manager, WQAX (including organizing some street dances); host of "The Real Rock -n- Roll Radio Show", "Uncle Billie's Thrill Night Review", "The Western Lands", "Radio Free Bloomington" on WQAX; produced Bloomington cassette compilation "Hoagy Picks the Hits", was on several Live From Bloomington selection committees; performed live at several Snowy Nights and Culture Shocks (live poetry skree, usually with Bob Wagner) . . . early to mid '90's - co-founded lit/rant zine "Bears On Text", manager Sam Goody's; sometime music critic for "Ryder" magazine; co-host of "Melody Unasked For" on WFHB . . .

Started with The Belgian Waffles! in 1986 and The Catkillers in 1987; left the Bloomington/Nashville area to join the other Waffles in Louisville in 1997; in Louisville continued with the Waffles! as well as joining country/blues/punk freaks Mudflap with ex-Bloomingtonians Elijah Pritchett, Matt Whitaker, and Rob Stockwell. Also formed avant/improv combo the Butchertown All Stars with Tony Woollard, Josh Metlyng, and Norman Minogue. Left TBW! after the 20th anniversary celebration to concentrate on my own projects.

Currently I am recording and performing solo as Hoosier Pete and working with various folk in a noise ensemble I call Black Kaspar. For details, see www.myspace.com/hoosierpete2 and www.myspace.com/blackkaspar .
What bands are you or have you been in?
The Belgian Waffles!, The Catkillers, Mudflap, the Butchertown All Stars, KARK, Black Kaspar. Hoosier Pete.
What city are you from?
Born in Anderson, college in South Bend, lived in Bloomington/Nashville area '84 - '97

Everyone I knew in the 80's Bloomington scene loved the Cramps. For fans, casual or otherwise, this is a fun read. And those early pictures of Poison Ivy are priceless.

Enjoy!

Sonata for Crazy Ass Traffic

Another post from The Death of Everything. It seems at least tangentially relevant.

The TBW! posse was rolling up to Chicago (from Bloomington, late 80's) for a show at Club Dreamerz. Tony was living there at the time, the rest of us were in Bton. We ran up 65 (natch), stopping at a gas station just north of Lafayette to fill up & grab the $2.99 gas station cassette that would be our talisman for the trip.

Quick aside here . . . is this som… Continue

"That's the way I like it baby, I don't wanna live forever!"

This is a post from my regular site, The Death of Everything. Since it is music-oriented, I thought I would also put it up here. Enjoy!

"And don't forget THE JOKER!!"

The case can be made (a case strong as the smell emanating from under… Continue

Prelude 2: The College Years

I meant to talk about Dow Jones and the Industrials in this post, but in the process of trying to provide more context, the thing just got too damn long, so I'm chopping it into two. Next time I'm definitely getting to D J & I. Really.

When you’re a sheltered kid with a healthy curiosity stuck in middle of Indiana, you always get the feeling that everything happens somewhere else. When you get to a midwestern college, you have plenty of coastal/big city compatriots who whine a… Continue

Gynecologists!

Just got this e-mail from Gulcher today:

The Gynecologists 1981-1994
HOOSIER PSYCHOPATHS:
THE OFFICIAL RECORDINGS
(Gulcher 432)

Of all the sick and sordid sagas to come floating out of the punk rock scene in isolated Indiana, none are more twisted than the ravings of Tommy Afterbirth and the band he founded in the late 1970s, the legendary Gynecologists. Tommy learned to love the seedy underbelly of pop culture at his father's drive-in movie theater, in the small redneck town south of Indianap… Continue

It's the same as traffic school, yeah. At the end I said, "Congratulations on having your violations dismissed--now everybody can go celebrate with a beer!" The kid next to me started laughing.
Whatever you do, don't sit in the front; those people are the trying to be the shining stars of traffic school, and you will want to kill one of them. There is no homicide school...

Hey Bill, Really enjoyed your blog about car music and traffic. I have been working on a blog about cassettes for a while and hope to have it up soon, or maybe a group for cassette fiends. Wanna help?

I added the 1987 Spud Zero Waffles gig to my playlist (& The N.I.D.S.). It ends with a pleasing audience free-for-all. If I knew how to embed the link to the audio directly here, I'd do it.

John, that doesn't sound like the Amy Revalee I know. I've never seen your father, but I'm pretty sure Amy would never give YOU her number. Ha Ha.
