Ok, how about a little game here. What ten songs from MFT would you want if you were stuck on a island, in the middle of the ocean, with no hope of rescue but still equipped with a fully charged iPod that strangely only contains 10 songs? I will post mine here shortly with links for listening pleasure. What would yours be?
You can select them from the list of bands in the archive- http://www.musicalfamilytree.com/mp3-archive
Showing my age here (or at least my lack of familiarity with recent stuff there as I've not lived in Indiana for 20 years now,) but here's my list in alphabetical order, with appendix:
Dancing Cigarettes - Broken Windows
The Gizmos - The Midwest Can Be All Right
Otis Gibbs - Caroline
The Panics - Drugs Are For Thugs
The Pattern - Unnatural Silence
Rosebloods - Angeline
Rosebloods - Face to Face
Zero Boys - Livin' in the 80s
And a couple that I don't think are on here but should be:
Dow Jones & the Industrials - Can't Stand the Midwest
Dow Jones & the Industrials - Rock & Roll Don't Come From New York
I'm not sure I'd want to hear them over and over for the rest of my life, but here are ten songs that I think are pretty great:
El Nino: Lucky Day
Kaiser Cartel: Okay
Apparitions: God Monkey Robot
Margot and the Nuclear So and So's: Skeleton Key (album cut)
Zero Boys: High Places (from the Master Tape Vol. 1)
Mysteries of Life: Southdowns
Gizmos: Hard Hoboken Line
Sardina: He's On Drugs Again
Dandelion Abortion: Teenage Reject
Winechuggers: Long Circuitous Path
Plus just about anything by the Vulgar Boatmen, but it's all live recordings and I prefer the albums.
I Got the Blues Now Honey America Owns the Moon
New Home Infamy Bill Cameron

Locusts Gentleman Caller
Where I Am Jeb Banner

A Sea Chanty of Sorts Margot
They Didn't Need Me at Work Today Marty Green
Accept Me The Pieces
Too Many Pictures The Sheds
Lady Liberty Vess Ruhtenberg
Street Where You Live Vulgar Boatmen
Missionary Monk Modern Vending
Sardina- Jealous Frog (nothing against the studio tracks but this live recording gave me chills before LP passed and just slays me now. His voice is so fragile and powerful. This may be his best song).
Uvula - D-E-M-O-N-S (before I saw the track title for this song I thought they were singing "You'll never get rid of your D-E-M-O-S".")
The Vegetables- I Dig The Scenery (If this Bloomington band had been transported back in time they could have been one of the best psych bands of the 1960s).
The Sheds- All You Need (love this song, can't ever hear it enough. Chris' voice is perfect)
Get Down heels - Spoon Furies
Armistice - Arson Garden
Superelastic - Velo Deluxe
Lobster Boy - Velo Deluxe
Pickled Frogs - Sardina
Hey - Sardina
Bandaids and Mason jars - Gentleman Caller
Let Henry be the Preacher - Stranded at the Drive In
Tunell Queen - Stranded...
#1 (Genital Van) - Thumptingle
Gentleman Caller - Crossing Guard
Vulgar Boatmen - You Don't Love Me Yet
Sardina - He's on Drugs Again
Mysteries of Life - FIngerprint
United States 3 - Waterproof
Action Strasse - Impatient Love
Lovemeknots - Dutch Boy
Hey Hey Melodica - Hey Kid
Margot - Tall as Cliffs (demo)
Stranded at the Drive-In - Soundcheck
Because I enjoy arbitrary restrictions, I limited myself to one song per artist, and only songs that are actually on the site. With the exception of the Touchy Subjects track, these are all from the time when I was living in Bloomington during the 90s.
Pretty Shitface – Uvula
Hey – Sardina
Armistice - Arson Garden
Euphoria - El Nino
White Rhino – Cadmium Orange
Simple Imple - Yarnmarvins
Ed is On No Side (listed as Track 04 on the site) - Intro to Airlift
Memorandum – Pencil
Universe – Speed Luxury
Track 06 - Touchy Subjects

Ryan: My arbitrary restriction was that I couldn't spend more than 5 minutes researching songs to check whether they were on the site, which pretty much left me thinking of things off the top of my head that I suspected would be there. In all cases, I was right.
Any two The Cavelords songs
Any two Modern Vending songs (from the "Lost Tapes")
Any two The Singles songs
Any two Dave Allen/Reaction songs
Any two John Scot Sheets songs
Andy, yeah, I know what you're saying...the Lemonheads then instantly faded into multi-platinum obscurity. That's such a great perspective when most people have no idea the band even existed pre-1992.
If anyone bothering to read this hasn't heard t…
I'm not crazy about Michael Jackson or modern-day indie rock, but I will sing the SHIT out of some prime Manilow.
Burd, you nailed me.
I write the songs that make the whole wooooorld siiiing....
ahhhh Bullet Lavolta, their 1st 12" almost bordered on being the new Jerry`s Kids !!! Then they hit the UK with the Lemonheads & they both fell away.....those were the days lol
What gets me is people forget that punk/hardcore was NOT a private party…

Burd, I would never accuse you of being shy about speaking your mind. And I doubt anyone would have thought me anything but a raging snob from way back. And with the anti-Manilow snobbery of the post below, we continue to have plenty in common. FTR:…
John, it didn't seem like good natured to me when I went back and looked. It reeked of pretentious snobbery. Haughtiness. The funny thing is; I'd probably step up and say something if someone was doing it to you. Incidently, there are all sorts of t…
