Your Tonic Ball Memory

Tonic Ball has been one of the highlights of the musical calendar. Just today my favorite barista told me that she knows the holiday is here when Tonic Ball arrives.

It struck me that we probably all have similar feelings and great experiences associated with the benefit for Second Helpings.

Submit your favorite Tonic Ball memories, and maybe we can swing a pair of tickets for the best ones.

Here's mine, names have been changed.

Tonic Ball 2008 was a blast. I have always loved Queen more tha… Continue

Finally, after several years of work and a major reconstruction effort following the passing of LonPaul (aka LP) Elrich (who is all over this album- playing drums, keyboards, guitars, singing and also producing) we are proud to be offering "Lucky Epitaph" by Chris Kupersmith and Old Flames.

You can stream the album here and also purchase via digital download. Take it from someone that has been following and listening to this album as it came together over the last year- this… Continue

Documenting some interactivity isses in NIng on MFT with Firefox 3.5.4 under Mac OS X 10.6.1

testing, couldn't post a comment on the scarcity thread - looks like a js widget is not loading. I'm testing to see if it's local to the post or if it affects me in all comment boxes.

UPDATE: I can't post in comment boxes, and I can't logout. Killing my browser, will be back to see if that fixes things.

Specs:

FF 3.5.4, Mac OS X 10.6.1, plenty of RAM (4gb), late-model MacBook Pro - the setup has been consistent for a fair while, I'd say the main variable in question is the version of Firefox.… Continue

Armed Forces In America (The Marketing of Elvis Costello)

Armed Forces In America (The Marketing of Elvis Costello)

On March 11 1979, Elvis Costello and the Attractions played the IU Auditorium in Bloomington Indiana, on March 14 in Columbus Ohio, he hit the wall.

The part I remember the most was they had these green lights that shot horizontally across the stage instead of shining down on the band. Elvis ordered the audience to stand up, bass player Bruce Thomas executed an amazing cross-legged drop to the stage. PLOP! I think the band though… Continue

Band of the Week-Jookabox

Dead Zone Boys, the new album by Jookabox is an undeniably strange, but engaging slab of oddball pop. David Adamson's Jookabox
(previously Granpall Jookabox) project has been steadily shifting its
sound over the course of 3 albums, a shift that Adamson describes as
owing more the his evolving musical t… Continue

Lowercase m - Anthology

is now up on MFT.

Lowercase m performed and recorded around Indianapolis throughout the mid 1990s. Their harmonious vocal sound and acoustic instrumentation delighted singer/songwriter fans throughout the area. Their folksy style augmented the alternative cover songs they interpreted, as well as their own catchy originals. They often performed at The Outback, The Patio, and Cafe Angst, and were monthly regulars at the Village Idiot, as well as performing live on local radio several times.

I don't know that it does. It sounds fine in the context of the band. I don't buy all the true-bypass hype and employ many buffered pedals. This was for the one take attempt. Plenty of overdubs with just the essential pieces.

I can honestly say that the Tonic Ball has changed my life. I watched enthralled the first year and have been part of the committee ever since then. Not only has it led to my writing about music, but to a perfect-for-me job at Second Helpings. Lot...
